Excellent Software directors Alex Heffer and Damien Poppelwell started their careers in retail management before moving into the computer industry. Alex formed Excellent Software's parent company Pacific Business Systems Ltd with John Hansen in 1990 to design and support computer systems for home appliance retailers a market it has lead since 1994.

In the early days the company focused on building robust retail computer solutions, which could be setup and tested in Auckland, delivered to remote customers at an agreed price and then supported by telephone and modem. Working with detailed checklists and hardware standards the company built a reputation for providing reliable value for money retail computer systems. The standard system methodology removed the need for clients to have staff with computer expertise and reduced the need for onsite support minimizing clients running costs.
  • In 1992 Alex Heffer designed unique point of sale negotiation tools and actual cost margin reporting systems that made it possible to accurately pay and motivate salespeople on profitability instead of sales.
  • In 1996 the business installed its largest retail system at L.V. Martin Ltd with 75 terminals running online.
  • In 1998 the business installed its first sports store system in Auckland and started to branch out into other computer software markets including sales representative systems and business intelligence software.
  • In 1999 the business was the first in New Zealand to release Linux based retail software and has since installed over 30 Linux retail and email servers.
  • In 2001 Alex Heffer and Damien Poppelwell formed Excellent Software Ltd to focus on the supply and support of retail systems for New Zealand independent retailers. 
  • In August 2001 after an extensive search for a suitable windows based software packages, Excellent Software Ltd signed a distribution agreement with Tower Systems to market the Retailer software, which has over 1,500 sites, installed in Australia. 

Based in Auckland, Excellent Software Ltd supports retail customers located between Dunedin and Whangarei, Excellent provides software support via the telephone and Internet and hardware support via regional contractors.

Customers need not have staff with computer expertise and Excellent regularly follows up sites checking backups and software integrity to pick up on the need for support or hardware upgrades.

Excellent Software provides a 'one stop shop' and single point of contact if problems occur providing peace of mind to it's many clients.
